on my ipod nano, when you were playing a song, you could scroll to certain parts of a song.

on my ipod touch, that option doesn't come up. i don't know how to make it do that. for an hour, i had the option while playing the song, but now it's gone again.

i just got my ipod touch this week, so it should be one of the newer ones.

How to add a rockin microphone to your mac laptop
I've found a really nice combo for replacing the default MacBook Pro microphone with a USB microphone.

    It's actually two parts:

    1) the analog USB adaptor (allows you to plug in an analog microphone) :

There are lots of Analog Sound USB Adapters out there out there. I have two of them that came from headset purchases. One by Altec Lansing and one by Plantronics (came with the Audio 625 USB Stereo Headset).

    2) the actual analog microphone.

To me this is the real gem: I found this GE standing desktop microphone that has a detachable mic for $10 at Target. The mic is about 1.5 inches long once detached. Read more... )

    switching between hard drives?
Question: on a Macbook (Intel Core Duo, 2006-ish model) is it possible to switch between two different hard drives running two different versions of OSX? I just installed a new one and put Snow Leopard on it but I still have the old one with Tiger on it, and was wondering if I could pop the old one in and use it, then back to the newer one, without issue?

iMovie rotating videos 90 degrees on it's own.
I have two videos, both recorded with my iPhone.

    They are vertically oriented videos.

When I load them into iPhoto that remain vertical. and Play correctly.

When I load them into iMovie they video clips look correct in the clips area... BUT over in the movie preview area you'll see it's been rotated 90 degrees. NO IDEA WHY...

Click here to see the screenshot of what I'm seeing.

How do you fix this? Because when I export the video it's coming out in the 90degrees rotated view.

I don't know why iMovie is roating the clips like this, but you can edit them and mouse over them in the edit clip area and it's oriented correctly. It's just not oriented correctly in the preview area or in any video that I export....

    How do you fix this?

    iChat question
My partner and I are having trouble with our iChats. We're both on Macs (he's on an older G4 tower, and I'm on last year's MacBook thingy. Anyway, lately, if we use iChat for a vidchat, we can see each other, but I can't hear him. He can hear me.

We tried using Skype, but then I could hear him and he couldn't hear me. We still could see each other.

    Any suggestions?

What's Up with that Firmware Update?
Does anyone know what the EFI firmware for unibody MacBook(Pro)s that Apple just released is all about? From what I read in Software Update and on their website, it's supposed to keep the drive silent upon wake and boot.

I don't particularly have a problem with the little "errr errr" of the head moving back and forth in an attempt to read a disc, so I'm wondering why they thought this was an important update. Was there some more serious symptoms out there of which I am unawares?

I have a Magic Mouse that I bought when it first came out. So far, it's been working great. All the sudden, though, the two finger swipe to navigate function isn't working. It's still checked in the preferences, and the battery level is at 51%, so I have no clue why it just stopped working all the sudden.

I tried unchecking and rechecking the box, as well as disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse. No such luck.

All other functions of the mouse work normally (scrolling, right click, etc.).

Anyone know what might be going on?

    External HD problems
So I decided to erase all the data on my External HD because I used it before with an old PC and now I wanted to erase it and make it compatible with my MacBook.

So I went through all the steps to erase and make it work and all of that but in the middle of it erasing all the data, it just stops and the external HD just decides to stop working. Next time I plug in the HD again, it appears and I can drag files to it fine. Now I'm trying to plug it in again and it's not appearing at all on my desktop and when I try to repair it, it gives me these messages.

    Trading Macbooks
I was offered from a friend to trade my 2008 13" aluminum body Macbook for my friend's 2009 Macbook Pro which they don't use. It's an great upgrade for me, definitely.

What is the best way to rid my Macbook of all my personal data for the trade?

I have an external hard drive I can transfer things to. Do I just transfer to the external then delete the stuff off my Macbook? Is this the best/most secure way? What about the applications' stored data? I don't want things recoverable so I want to make sure everything is wiped off it. I do have the disk it came with for OSX...would this be another possibility?

I'm looking for the most secure way for this trade.

    Thanks everyone <3

    Notification System
**FINAL EDIT Thu Dec 10 02:15:47 UTC 2009**

So there is the final update... Over the past day we have processed around 11 million jobs out of the 12 million that were in queue at that time. Please bear in mind that over this past day, more jobs for notifications are also created. So while the queue has been dropping, we are still not fully caught up at this point, due to backlog and new jobs. We have roughly 3 million jobs still pending that involve the notification system in some manner. We had hoped we could have fully cleared the queue in a day, but unfortunately we can't clear it too quickly, since we need the rest of the site to operate normally. From our current perspective on the amount of jobs that are left in queue, and how many it has processed thus far, we believe it will take around another 8 - 12 hours to process everything.

And finally some answers to some questions:

    F1-F12 Shortcuts
I have a Macbook that I got in 2008. So the F1 through F12 settings have icons on them for the shortcut they perform. I left my laptop open last night and my cat managed to change a ton of the settings.

I got back the F1-F4 functions (dim, brighten, show all windows, dashboard) but can't figure out how to change the F7-F12 functions

    They should be:
    F7 play previous song
    F8 play/pause
    F9 play next song
    F10 mute
    F11 Decrease volume
    F12 increase volume.

any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated !

    fan stuff
Ok, I'm running a Dual 2.5 gig G5 and my fans are getting a bit noisy. I could probably clean them a little bit more, but I had an idea. I'd like to run it by people in here first if I could. Wouldn't it be fine to actually replace the fans within the assemblies with new ones of the same size? It would take a bit of wiring, but that should be pretty simple. Shouldn't it? In fact, maybe some of the lighted ones would make a nice effect showing through the grating in the front of the machine. If anything I assume that high end, aftermarket fans would likely be quieter and more efficient wouldn't they?

Any input on this would be helpful, but it does sound like a fun project. Worst case scenario that I see would be having to buy pulled/used fan assemblies if it all goes horribly wrong. Those seem to be available, just pricey.

I've already replaced the power supply on this beast and if I can do that, I figure I can do just about anything. Just a warning, do not attempt to replace a power supply on a liquid cooled G5 unless you are willing to curse a great deal, sweat buckets and cross your fingers... a lot.

I have a white macbook 13" that I got in August 2007. I am looking for a case (better late than never). However, I've been looking for it, and all i can find is cases for the new macbook, and they all just have a case for the outside. I was looking for something that can go over the keyboard and the area around the track pad.

Can anyone help me find this or point me in the right direction? Thank you

    Hello,
haha I feel I post so many questions here. So I work at a dance studio and we have two apple tv's in the studio, one for music and the other for the videos we play. However when I want to upload new things to one of the apple tv's the itunes is only finding one of them. I've tried unplugging it then making sure it's hooked up to the same network, but it wont find it I also downloaded the newer version of itunes and it still wont find it. It's found it on the device thing before. I'm so confused! hahah

    deleting mail forever Gmail/IMAP
I'm having major issues deleting mail forever using Mail.
I use Gmail accounts and IMAP. I have all my settings correct.

My problem is: When I go to "All Mail" Folder on Mail app the messages I deleted originally are all in there. I try to delete them but they come back again.

Any idea how to solve this guys?

    Thanks

    iTunes help
I've got a sudden problem with iTunes, specifically with video viewing. I rented Life of Brian the other day, from the iTunes store, and couldn't find the window it was playing in - I could hear the audio track, but couldn't find the video for a few moments. I don't recall what I did to find it; I kind of randomly clicked around, and all of a sudden it was showing in the main iTunes window. I had not, so far as I know, had any other windows open.

I also watched a couple of television shows, purchased through the iTunes store since then, with no problems regarding playback. Then today I had the music on shuffle and it went to a video, but didn't automatically play the video; as with Life of Brian, it played the audio only. I checked with a couple other music videos, and I cannot make any of them play the actual video track.

I checked the help file, but I have QuickTime 7.6.4, so that's not the problem. I turned on the artwork column, which I've never had on before, but that didn't solve the problem, and the image showing for the video I was playing was actually from a different video. I did upgrade, right before all this started, to iTunes 9.0.2; I'm still running Leopard (and this is the sort of thing that makes me not want to upgrade to Snow Leopard!) so I'm assuming this is an issue with the upgrade, but it's narrowly possible it's an issue with Life of Brian, as that was the first time I've watched a purchased/downloaded movie on my computer, and it's possible I somehow flipped a setting trying to find the video track, though I didn't do so to the best of my recollection.

Anyone have any thoughts or know what's going on here?

    HP C3100 all-in-one
Long story short: when I installed Snow Leopard ~a month and a half ago, I forgot to back up my HP C-3100 All-In-One software. I need to use my scanner urgently, so I downloaded the HP printer drivers from Apple.com. Do I need the software itself? Is that different than the drivers? How the fuck can I open the program to select "scan" (there's no button on my printer itself, you have to do it through the program)??? D: Please halp...

    Ordering iPhoto products
I'm impressed with the quality of the iPhoto print products for such a low price. Ordered a few for Christmas already!

I wrote and illustrated a little story for my cousin's birthday and I'd like to get it printed. The iPhoto books are very reasonably priced (I'm not even sure where else in New Zealand I'd be able to order a pre-bound book, actually).

However, I've noticed that a lot of photo printing places will balk at anything illustrated because they assume you don't own the copyright. The Terms & Conditions for iPhoto do not mention this, it just mentions porn (duh) and that they can refuse to print anything if they want to (standard legalese).

Has anyone tried to order an iPhoto product using images that aren't photos? Did it work?

    Apple Mail issues
Of the dozen or so clients I work with throughout town who offer their WiFi for me to use, only one doesn't let me check my Apple Mail. I have to go through my MobileMe account to retrieve and send email.

Anyone know why this is the case, and is there any workaround other than using MobileMe? Could I try using different port settings maybe?

(Apple Mail v4.2, IMAP retrieval, OSX 10.6.2 on a 2.5Ghz Macbook Pro)

    Thanks in advance.
